Climbing Languedoc - part 1

Last week we where in the South of France with all of our colleagues in our pretty and quite village Cantignergues in the Languedoc Roussillon.
For almost 8 years I'm coming here for all kind of Outdoor activities and it's a great place to climb!
There are two big climbing area's, the Notre Dame du Cros with 70 routes and the Gorges de la Cesse with 160 routes. The rocks are limestone and the routes vary from 5a to 8a+. But the reason why I love this place is because it's very peacefull. You can climb for days without encounter any people!

This time we climbed just up to 5c a very nice route called "Le Fil De L'Épée" (nr. 22 on the picture).

The sun was shining and the wind was blowing and that was the only thing we heard! The climb is easy with lots of good anchor points. Next time (beginning of April) we will try some other routes and we hope again that the only thing we will hear is the whispering of the wind through the trees an dthe singing of the swallows!

  1. can see why you like the area and we do occassionally go that way for a change in scenary. however we prefer the L'herault valley as it has a greater range of crags to go to and some really fabulous routes. have a look at climblanguedoc.co.uk for some pictures and blog.

All the best Fiona and Keith Sanders
